Nixon Before the Scandal
Richard Milhous Nixon was the 37th president of the United States and served from 1969-1974. He served as a moderate republican who was previously a representative and senator of California. He was also the Vice President under Lyndon B. Johnson.
Nixon the child of Francis and Hannah Nixon and was born in Yorba Linda, California. In 1934 he graduated from Whittier College from where he attend the Duke University Law School. He answered the call for draft as a member of the U.S. Navy when he served in World War 2. He return to California where he practiced law making and met his wife, Pat Nixon. In 1942 they moved to Washington where Nixon started his political career. In 1946 he was elected in California as their state representative and in 1950 he was elected to senate. After losing both a campaign for the governor of California and for the Presidential seat he became the vice president of Dewight . He was well known for his anti-communism and constant political competition.
After Nixon was elected as president he took on the challenge of the much unpopular Vietnam War. Over time he helped end U.S. involvement. Nixon was well known for many of his ideas. He helped create more peaceful foreign relations when he visited the People China Republic in 1972 and the well known Detente with the Soviet Union. He signed the Anti Ballistics Treaty with the Soviet Union. He also faced the challenge of the Arabian Oil Embargo which tested his foreign policy. His conservative anti drug bills and push for increased studies for disease treatment were well known.
However his real challenge came after his re-election when he the well known Watergate Scandal was traced back to his administration. After the controversy he resigned from presidency. Gerald Ford took his place as president. He would later die in 1994 from a stroke.
